An intrepid life is one dedicated to continued fearlessness, fortitude, and endurance in the pursuit of one’s goals. The mission of Intrepid Life Coffee & Spirits is to bring the Durham community together through intrepid acts to advocate for the people and issues that are important to you and to help you become healthier and happier in the process.
How do we do this? Intrepid Life Coffee & Spirits provides you with a venue for coffee food, and alcohol, as well as a relaxed atmosphere so that you can share your stories, your passions, and your good times with other people who want to have fun and help make a difference in your community. It also provides a venue and atmosphere for you to learn, enjoy, and pursue intrepid physical and mental activities. It provides you with the motivation and knowledge necessary to accomplish this by hosting social and educational events, displaying informational material throughout the building, honoring and supporting key members and groups within the community, and partnering with businesses in the downtown and wider-Durham area.
Intrepid Life Coffee & Spirits is owned solely by Matt Victoriano, with no investors and no competing interests. This means I’m free to pursue and develop my vision of helping others without shareholders or partners putting their own interests above you, my employees, and those in need.
Who am I? I’m a former Marine Corps sergeant who served as a Team Leader for Scout/Sniper teams during two tours in Iraq. I am currently serving in the National Guard as a non-commissioned officer after completing over a year of active duty special operations training.
My management and supervisory experience is due in large part to years of creating and implementing programs and protocols for selection, training, and combat operations involving thousands of people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ethnicities and involving the government, military, NGO, and private sector arenas. I used this experience to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, and Latin American studies, as well as work with hundreds of individuals, businesses, government officials, and media organizations across the country in order to improve economic development through use of innovative messaging, communications, and customer service techniques. This work involved management and supervision of multiple business responsibilities including finances, human resources, marketing, and development.
Oh, and I’m a connoisseur of coffee, beer, liquor, and wine.
Do you know that North Carolina only requires coffee shops and bars to pay their employees the federal cash wage of $2.13 an hour? This puts North Carolina on equal footing with Mississippi (the poorest state), Tennessee (the 3rd poorest state), and Louisiana (the 5th poorest state). Even Arkansas (the 2nd poorest state) and West Virginia (the 4th poorest state) have higher standards! (http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm#NorthCarolina)
At Intrepid Life Coffee & Spirits, instead of paying our baristas less than minimum wage, we'll adjust our prices to provide our baristas and bartenders with living wages. Plus, with the problems surrounding veteran unemployment and suicide, it is my mission to hire as many veterans as possible.
